Recovering from a bad case of the ‘Smlu’

I haven’t been blogging much of late, despite it being one of my many new year’s resolutions. I am busy, but most of all I think I have a case of the Smlu. Over tired and completely run down, not by social media, but social media rhetoric.

However, not one to be knocked down by a bit of man-smlu I will get back on the blogging horse and wade through the Smrap. (sorry I’m soooo social mediafied).

Pulling me through these dark days has been Marcus Brown’s Twitter readings and Henry Jenkins’ thoughtful posts (way more than 140 characters) on ‘If it doesn’t spread it’s dead. ATCHOOOOO! Sorry, back soon

I’m back…well almost

Now I’ve finally stopped being a travelling bum I’m left with the reality that I need to start working. It’s exciting getting settled in a new country and getting your head around a new market and culture but I’m sure my brains have turned to mush over the last 7 months. In my first interview, which was the day after landing and the first real conversation about work in a long time, I was asked my thoughts on the future of planning. Talk about in at the deep end.

It has been a difficult first week to say the least but I’ve stacked up on Adnews publications and it is like I’ve never been away. The industry in Aus are talking about many of the things being discussed before I left the UK such as the new agency model, employing interesting people, skill shortages, measurement and effectiveness etc etc etc. There are alot of surprising differences starting to emerge, some of which are good and bad but I’ll blog about these shortly.

So it’s back to school for me and hopefully back to this blog a bit more frequently.

Everything is against me!

I think I´m destined not to be able to keep this blog going whilst I´m away. Internet connections generally aren´t the fastest out here and to make matters even worse I got mugged last night in Granada, Nicaragua, and the bastard legged it with my camera. I had loads to blog about that pretty much relied on some awesome photos!

However there could be light at the end of the tunnel. A security guard saw it happen and knows who did it. I´m now involved in some kind of plan to catch the guy tonight with the police. Very exciting, although I could do without it! Who knows, I might get it back if I´m lucky!

Blog stranded in Mexico City…

I’ve got a few posts up my sleeve, I’m just struggling to find an Internet cafe that has any kind of USB connection so I can upload some photos. As soon as I can get to one I’ll be back posting again.

Life through a lens

I’m left with a bit of a dilemma. I don’t want to spend the next six months travelling and having to think about communications and work type stuff but I also don’t want to leave this blog (and my brains) lying dormant. So I have come up with the following idea…

It’s a bit like a personal photography ethnography for want of a better expression. I’m going to hone my photographic skills by asking the question: ‘Who cares about big advertising budgets when there is this in the world?’……insert image

I don’t know where it’s going to go. But I’m hoping it will vary from the irreverence to the deep and meaningful. This should keep me on my toes.

Ich bin dreizehn…

Is the only bit of German I can remember. But what excites me more is that yesterday’s post has been translated and posted on to some German blog. It could be slagging me off for all I know, but I was tickled by the translation of a couple of things…

Beverly Hills Cop translates as Beverly Hügel Polizist

Crocodile Dundee translates as Krokodil Dundee

I’m easily pleased but you learn something everyday

As part of my ‘think less do more’ travel plans I’ve bought myself a flash new camera to hone my photography skills and a harmonica. I’m determined to use this time as an opportunity to do things I’ve always wanted to do. Playing music being one of them, not necessarily the harmonica. But my thinking behind the harmonica is that it fits better into my backpack than a cello.

My first task according to my book is to conquer jingle bells. Stay tuned for an update on my harmonica tour of Central and South America.

A Soviet poster a day…

Yep just what you always wanted I know, a blog about Russian posters.

I personally love posters. They are arguably the simplest form of communications but often the most interesting creatively and in this case politically. This blog doesn’t just flag up various posters from over the years it gives you the full history behind each one.

Here’s my favourite…

The Communications Room goes global

Some people may accuse me of having a habit of committing various forms of career suicide. I think it’s worked out pretty damn good to be honest. But first of all I was ‘uninteresting’ and did a marketing communications degree. Not only that, I did it at a ‘new’ University. Then I decided not to work in London’s ‘adland’, whilst pursuing my education at OU doing an MA in Social Science Research. To make matters worse, my research method of choice is the fluffy ethnography. Well here’s another good one to add to this list.

I’m giving up my role as a communications strategist after busting my balls for 8 years to get here. What am I doing? Backpacking around Central and South America for 6 months and then I’ll hopefully pursue said given up career in Australia. I’ve still got plans for this blog and I’m going to continue to post as much as I can whilst I’m away. Although with perhaps a more international flava!

Hopefully I can join some coffee mornings from Mexico City to Buenos Aires with a host of interesting people. So anyone out there who is up for meeting up during my fleeting visits to various Cities over the next 6 months, get in contact.

More importantly anyone in Sydney who fancies giving me a highly paid planning job around May next year then please feel free to do the same.

I don’t leave for a few weeks yet so hopefully I ‘ll have some time for a bit more blogging whilst I wind down. I’m very apprehensive to be leaving my job, but excited about the road ahead.

Plotting the Plannersphere

I’ve been meaning to have a go at this Political Compass Test since Charles posted it a while ago. As you can see, The Communications Room is only slightly more authoritarian and left than Punk Planning.

Go on, have a go and politically plot the Plannersphere
