I’m a PC and I have a soul….oh and a beard

Seeing as I started following the wiggle and the robot I feel like I should at least keep going, even if I am slow off the mark on getting to post about the ‘I’m a PC’ ads. But I actually thought this was a pretty smart move by Microsoft and genuinely liked where this went. I get this a bit more than the Gates and Seinfeld spots and whilst it wasn’t ground breaking, it does feel right.

It’s a thoughtful piece, not a revolutionary we are changing war cry. I like the fact Microsoft is standing its ground and reframing how people feel about it. It’s as if Microsoft hasn’t just made it OK to admit you use a PC, it actually gives you an air of substance and depth over a Mac user. They have been blinded by the lights, popular culture and slick designs where as the PC user has just got on with their meaningful existence and got great stuff done.

Apple has had it very easy over the last few years doing a number on Microsoft with very little response, so it’s good to see them add another chapter to the story.

Nintendo shakes up Youtube

Nintendo and Youtube have pulled off this awesome execution. It’s great to see these kind of deals being done. I don’t know what else to say on this apart from it rocks.

Thanks to The Barbarian Group for the find.

The System of Objects

The System of Objects by Jean Baudrillard certainly isn’t an easy read. It’s one of those books that will make the average person question their own intellect. So even with my massive heeed I had to accept that parts of this book flew slightly due north. There are loads of some gems amongst the academic guffawing that make it well worth sticking with. However, if you want the condensed version, good old Wikipedia can help you out here.

The general gist is focused on the social understanding of objects and how people & technological progress have become more complex than the objects themselves. Drawing relationships between the functional, sociological and the cultural understanding of objects everything from antiques to robots are covered in this book. Baudrillard argues that all objects signify something socially and people’s needs from an object ‘are constructed rather than innate’.

Considering this was written in 1968 it is still a must read and whilst it is extremely flouncy there are many great insights into the future that are scarily accurate and very relevant today. Such as people’s ever growing need for objects to automate their lives being one such instance.

I like the idea of looking at the things we sell as objects rather than brands and products, mainly because it feels like a better way to generate thoughts and ideas. Its way more flexible, cuts out all the crappy marketing speak , unhelpful research and sort of makes you think about what you selling from the perspective of how people use it and feel about. I guess it’s a more user centric term than a brand centric term.

The invasion of social networks

Found this via Graham Furlong’s great blog. It’s reasons like this I want one awesome aggregator.

Bare naked creativity and stealing clever people’s technology

I would never tell a client that they should reduce their budgets in order to make us more creative, because quite frankly it isn’t true. A bigger budget obviously always provides you with greater opportunities but I love this idea posted by Howies that suggests when budgets are smaller it makes them think harder about what they should be doing with the money. As well as making people  more creative and accountable it sort of makes the idea that much purer.

With free off the shelf tools and  open source applications all you need is a bit of a technical aptitude, something interesting to talk about or show and voila, you have yourself a digital presence. If it’s good enough people will find it. It strips everything naked down to its barest form. It forces you to make sure you really do have a good idea before you start splashing your cash.

On a slightly different tangent but still using technology other people have built to tell your story is CCTV ‘video sniffing’. Essentially people use government CCTV networks to create mini productions. The UK has CCTV cameras pretty much everywhere, but what is interesting is that if you have been filmed, you are entitled to the footage. So essentially people are coming up with a concept and performing it in front of CCTV cameras, applying for the footage and editing it accordingly. Pretty damn clever in my opinion. The only down side is that it took one guy 5 years and over 200 applications to local councils to finish the project. But it shows what can happen if you put your imagination first before spending or assigning your budget.

Seinfeld & Gates # 2 Introducing the robot

I still haven’t managed to work out where this is going but the fact that the robot has come out so soon after the wiggle is a good sign in my opinion – it means there is loads more context and super cool moves to come. It still feels like Microsoft are simply just trying to humanise the beast, that’s the company not Bill Gates and warming people up for a narrative with many strands. I kind of like the fact that the core strategy isn’t arguably visible yet and people should be wondering what the hell they are trying to do. I think a big obvious reveal would have been exactly that, obvious and expected. My money is on Gates dropping the moonwalk next.

Those crazy scientist kids

Thankfully the world didn’t end yesterday but scientists need to learn a thing or two about the big reveal. This certainly didn’t leave me feeling that excited about something that cost a squillion dollars.

Seinfeld and Gates – is the wiggle just a sign of things to come?

Apart from Gates’ little booty shake at the end it didn’t really do much for me apart from humanise Microsoft a bit. I am however withholding judgment on this until I see how the story plays out. Let’s be honest it was never going bring back the love straight away. Anything too cool it would have been accused of emulating the Apple brand, anything too funny or confrontational it would have been accused of copying Apple’s ‘PC and Mac’ ads.

I think this is a long haul journey that’s not just about being a funny ad or undergoing a shiny makeover. It’s arguably one of the hardest, most complicated briefs in the world and isn’t just about a battle with Apple. I’m optimistic it’s going somewhere a bit more interesting and I can’t wait to see Gates putting a bit more oommph into it. The little tease. Softly, softly catchy monkey.
